Act of Contrition

Sorrow for sin, prayed in Confession and at night

Also known as: Prayer of contrition, O my God, I am heartily sorry

A carved wooden crucifix with a rosary at its base

O my God, I am heartily sorry for having offended you,
and I detest all my sins because of your just punishments,
but most of all because they offend you, my God,
who are all good and deserving of all my love.
I firmly resolve, with the help of your grace,
to sin no more and to avoid the near occasion of sin.
Amen.

About the Act of Contrition

The Act of Contrition expresses sorrow for our sins and the firm resolve not to sin again. It is prayed by the penitent in the Sacrament of Confession, and many Catholics also pray it every night before sleep.
